AAPSU meets central officials on refugee issue
NEW DELHI, Jan 4: Members of the All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union (AAPSU) today attended a joint high-level meeting with central officials in New Delhi to discuss the Chakma-Hajong refugee issue.
Chaired by the joint secretary for North-East, Ministry of home affairs, Satyendra Garg, the meeting was also attended by representatives of the Chakma and Hajong communities.
The union stood by its stance of opposing the granting of indigenous citizenship rights to members of the communities in the state.
AAPSU president Hawa Bagang said that the people of Arunachal Pradesh will never accept granting of citizenship rights. He also said that members of the two refugee communities have committed alleged atrocities against the indigenous people.
AAPSU general secretary Tobom Dai told representatives of the two communities to ‘grab the golden opportunity of citizenship outside Arunachal Pradesh without too much preconditions’.
He said that the ‘unrelenting attitude asking for citizenship within Arunachal Pradesh will boomerang and the people of the state will never accept it’.
