NIRJULI, Jul 14: Police have apprehended one Beauty Das, accused in multiple fraud cases amounting to Rs 27,20,000, from Cooch Behar, West Bengal.

The arrest follows complaints filed by local residents namely, Pintu Taid and Dugi Vivek, alleging financial misconduct by Das, who was employed as a collector for two cooperative societies in Nirjuli.

According to the complainants, Das, originally from Cooch Behar and currently residing in Nirjuli, had fraudulently collected Rs 7,20,000 from Taid and approximately Rs 20,00,000 from Vivek and 23 other individuals through her position at Demorijo Multipurpose Cooperative Society and Happy Thrift and Credit Society.

"In response to the complaints, Nirjuli police registered cases under relevant sections and initiated a thorough investigation," sub-inspector Shakti Lamgu, one of the investigating officers said.

Upon learning of the accused's whereabouts in Cooch Behar, Naharlagun SP Mihin Gambo, constituted an arrest team.

The team, composed of officers under the supervision of Naharlagun SDPO DySP Paul Jerang and inspector T M Nekam, successfully apprehended Das from Adhari village in Cooch Behar with the cooperation of local authorities.

"After completing procedural formalities, the accused was brought back to Nirjuli and produced before the CJM Court in Yupia," SP Gambo said.

The court has remanded Das to police custody for two days to facilitate further investigation into the case.
