NAMSAI, Aug 16: Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein inaugurated the "Theravada Buddhist Convention Hall" at Zero Point Nanam-Sulongtoo Village near here on Friday.
The ceremony was attended by Namsai MLA Zingnu Namchoom, Sanghanayaka APBS Ven Narindra Mahathero, APBS president Dhammakitti Mahathero and ABPS general secretary Ratnadeepa Bhikku, among other dignitaries.
The newly inaugurated convention hall is expected to play a crucial role in the preservation and promotion of Theravada Buddhism and will act as a hub for cultural enrichment in the community.
The event also featured the launch of the Pali textbook "Pali Akhara Pada," reflecting ongoing efforts to protect cultural heritage and traditional languages.
Addressing the gathering, Mein expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to participate in the event. He underscored the urgent need to preserve Theravada Buddhist culture, language, and beliefs, noting the declining presence of Theravada Buddhism in India compared to Mahayana Buddhism.
The deputy CM highlighted the significance of Namsai, where the Tai Khamti and Singpho communities are prominent followers of Theravada Buddhism.
He urged collective efforts to prevent the extinction of this tradition and mentioned that numerous scriptures are being prepared to ensure their transmission to future generations.
Mein also called for the proper maintenance of the temple premises and assured support for its upkeep and development.
Additionally, he encouraged Bikkhu Sanghas and village communities to collaborate in maintaining and caring for the shrine.
