Itanagar, Jan 17: The Arunachal SARAS Mela, which began on January 13, has already seen remarkable success, recording cumulative sales of Rs 40 lakh in just the first four days, reflecting the growing demand for rural products in urban areas.

The ten-day Mela, organised by the Arunachal State Rural Livelihoods Mission (ArSRLM), is a vibrant celebration of rural talent and enterprise. It was inaugurated by Chief Minister Pema Khandu at the D K Convention Hall in Itanagar.

Part of the union Rural Development ministry’s nationwide initiative, the event offers a unique platform for rural artisans and self-help groups (SHGs) from across India to showcase and sell their products.

Supporting the initiative, NABARD has provided grant assistance, helping to set up 10 stalls out of the 54 stalls at the fair.

These stalls, representing various districts of Arunachal Pradesh, feature a diverse range of products, including handloom and handicraft items, value-added processed foods, and Geographical Indication (GI) products unique to the state.

The SARAS Mela has become a transformative event for rural artisans, especially women, offering them economic and social empowerment. It strengthens the rural economy by providing direct market access and promoting the “Vocal for Local” initiative, highlighting indigenous products.

In addition to product sales, the Mela showcases Arunachal’s talented youth through performances in dancing, singing, and flower arranging, enriching the cultural fabric of the event. This holistic approach highlights the Mela’s role not only as a marketplace but also as a celebration of the state’s rural heritage and creativity.

The SARAS Mela 2025 demonstrates the potential of rural communities to significantly contribute to the economy when given the right platform.

The event’s success shows the importance of organizing such initiatives annually, ensuring sustained growth and empowerment for rural artisans and SHGs. NABARD has assured continued support for developing the rural economy of the state.
