Nirjuli, Feb 1: A 28-year-old woman, identified as Taha Timpu, was found hanging inside her rented room in Nirjuli on Thursday evening, police said.

Following the discovery of her body, a complaint was lodged at Nirjuli Police Station on January 31 against Manoj Mazumdar (38), accusing him of abetment to suicide.

The accused, employed in a private job in Nirjuli, was arrested the same day and has been remanded to judicial custody, officials said.

According to Naharlagun superintendent of police (SP) Mihin Gambo, the victim’s family grew suspicious after multiple calls and messages went unanswered. Upon reaching her residence, they found the room locked from inside and immediately alerted the police.

A post-mortem examination was conducted at TRIHMS, and preliminary findings suggest that the death occurred three to four days before the body was discovered, the SP said. Gambo said a detailed post-mortem report is awaited for further insights into the cause of death.

The police have registered a case under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) based on a complaint filed by the victim’s brother.

Mazumdar, a permanent resident of Jaipur, Pichola, under Bihpuria Police Station in Assam’s Lakhimpur district, is currently being interrogated.

SP Gambo said they are examining the victim’s belongings, including her phone call records, as part of the investigation.
