Itanagar, Feb 3: The Itanagar Municipal Corporation (IMC) has taken significant steps to improve sanitation in the city by engaging directly with sanitation workers and enforcing stricter cleanliness regulations.

During an interactive session here on Monday, IMC distributed PPE kits to sanitation workers to ensure their safety while carrying out their duties.

As part of its efforts to maintain cleanliness, IMC announced that it will impose fines on individuals caught littering in public places. Additionally, garbage collection will now be conducted twice a day to enhance waste management.

Speaking to the media later, IMC mayor Tamme Phassang emphasized that IMC has previously undertaken several awareness campaigns through its IEC (Information, Education, and Communication) events.

These initiatives included appointing former Miss Arunachal, Tengam Celine Koyu, as a brand ambassador and conducting awareness programs across different locations within the IMC jurisdiction.

However, the mayor stressed that awareness alone is not enough, and strict enforcement is now necessary.

“We have observed that some residents do not dispose of their garbage when IMC vehicles arrive in the morning. Instead, they later dump waste in public places, creating sanitation issues,” Phassang stated.

To curb this behavior, IMC will implement penalties against violators. The newly introduced garbage collection system will now operate in two shifts—morning and evening—to accommodate residents more effectively, he added.

To ensure the proper execution of these measures, IMC will deploy supervisors in each ward to monitor compliance. The corporation will also collaborate with the police and administration to enforce penalties strictly.

During the event, the mayor assured sanitation workers of the corporation’s full support. However, he also issued a stern warning to workers neglecting their duties, stating that those unwilling to perform their tasks sincerely should resign to make way for unemployed individuals ready to serve the city.

The Mayor further announced that hardworking and dedicated sanitation workers will be rewarded with promotions and salary enhancements as a token of appreciation.

The event was attended by deputy mayor Biri Basang, IMC commissioner Kego Jilen, and several corporators, who actively participated in the PPE kit distribution to sanitation workers.
