Khonsa, Feb 17: Expressing grave concern over the rising drug addiction among youth and the threat posed by drug peddlers, Governor K T Parnaik on Monday underscored that drug abuse is deteriorating the very fabric of society.
Inaugurating the counselling hall and isolation room at the Charju De-Addiction Center near Khonsa in Tirap district, the governor urged all responsible citizens to take a firm stand against this growing menace.
The Care Me Home Welfare Society operates the center.
Charju De-Addiction Centre chairperson, Sontung Lowang Bangsia, and renowned social activist Tai Tagak accompanied the governor on a tour of the center, briefing him on the NGO’s activities.
Parnaik expressed that helping individuals overcome addiction is akin to performing an act of God. He lauded the efforts of the Care Me Home Welfare Society, noting that their work significantly contributes to building a ‘Viksit Arunachal’, a healthier, more progressive society.
The governor called upon panchayat members, gaon buras, and community elders to play a vital role in monitoring, guiding, and mentoring the youth, ensuring they evolve into responsible and productive members of society.
He also emphasized the importance of early detection and reformative action to prevent youth from falling prey to addiction.
Addressing the young individuals struggling with addiction, Parnaik assured them that they have a bright future ahead. He encouraged them to believe in themselves, engage in physical activities such as sports, and acquire skills that will help them rebuild their lives.
He also pledged the government's full support in their recovery journey.
As a gesture of encouragement, the governor presented a ‘Team Arunachal’ lapel pin to a reformed youth who shared his personal battle with addiction. Parnaik urged him to inspire others by sharing his story and guiding them towards a drug-free, healthier life.
The event also saw active participation from recovering youth and inmates of the rehabilitation center.
Local MLA Wanglam Sawin, Tirap deputy commissioner Techu Aran, Director General of Police Anand Mohan, Inspector General of Police (TCL) P N Khrimey, and superintendent of police Singjatla Singpho were also present at the event.
