Itanagar, Mar 5: The Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women (APSCW) conducted a legal awareness programme in Vijaynagar, Changlang district, in collaboration with the All Tangsa Women Welfare Society (ATWWS) and the Yobin Welfare Society (Women Wing) (YWSWW).
The programme was sponsored by APSCW and aimed at educating women on their legal rights, health, and economic empowerment.
Addressing the gathering, APSCW chairperson Kenjum Pakam highlighted government efforts to bring development to remote areas and encouraged women to engage in Self Help Groups (SHGs) for financial sustainability. She stressed that entrepreneurship benefits individuals and generates employment, contributing to the socio-economic upliftment of indigenous communities.
Pakam also underscored the need for improved road and communication infrastructure in Vijaynagar for the region’s development.
APSCW vice-chairperson Nabam Yahi Tad outlined the powers and functions of APSCW. She expressed satisfaction in learning that polygamy and domestic violence are reportedly absent in the Yobin community and urged them to maintain their cultural values while fostering connections with the rest of the state.
APSCW member Kago T Yasung spoke on menstrual health, hygiene, and substance abuse. She emphasized the importance of proper menstrual hygiene management and sanitation, while also warning about the adverse effects of drug addiction on individuals, families, and society.
Member Komna Moidam addressed the participants on women’s empowerment and economic sustainability. She elaborated on women's fundamental rights and called for awareness and self-sufficiency. Moidam encouraged the use of traditional Yobin handlooms and handicrafts to promote economic growth and urged women to actively participate in decision-making processes.
Ngurang Nama, also a member of the commission, stressed the importance of marriage registration and urged couples to register their marriages under the Special Marriage Act for legal protection. She highlighted different forms of domestic violence, including verbal, financial, emotional, and mental abuse.
YWSWW president Yamanu Yobin and general secretary Ngiyonu Ngwazah also spoke at the event, which saw the participation of over 200 women.
