Bomdila, Mar 5: West Kameng Deputy Commissioner Akriti Sagar inaugurated The Reading Nest at the District Library in Bomdila, providing a dedicated space for knowledge and learning. The event was attended by heads of departments, students, members of the NGO Doctors For You (DFY), and members of the public.
Addressing the gathering, Sagar urged students to utilize the facility, which offers internet access, books on competitive exams, fiction, comics, and a range of other subjects. While acknowledging the shift in learning trends with digital platforms, she emphasized the continued relevance of books as a reliable source of knowledge. She also commended District Library and Information Officer (DL&IO) Lobom Tamin and his team for their efforts in enhancing the library’s reading space.
DL&IO Tamin highlighted the journey of renovating the library, stating that The Reading Nest aims to create an environment conducive to learning. He noted that while digital resources provide quick access to information, they often lack accuracy, whereas books offer more credible content. He also warned about the negative impact of excessive mobile phone use on concentration, contrasting it with the focused engagement required for reading books.
Studies indicate that students with strong reading habits perform better academically, he said, adding that reading enhances vocabulary, comprehension, and reduces stress. He urged parents to encourage reading at home to cultivate a culture of learning.
As part of the initiative, the district library has launched a month-long awareness campaign under the theme Read and Lead. A free membership drive will be conducted throughout the month, alongside competitions such as reading and storytelling. Plans are also underway to establish a Reading Club in Bomdila Township, with interested individuals invited to join.
Tamin expressed gratitude to DFY for funding the project under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative and thanked the district administration for its support. The initiative marks a step towards revitalizing reading habits and fostering a culture of learning in the community.
