Tawang, Mar 6: The district-level Narcotic Coordination Committee (NCORD) meeting of Tawang district was held on Thursday at the Deputy Commissioner's conference hall, with deputy commissioner Kanki Darang chairing the session.
The meeting reviewed the ongoing anti-drug measures and discussed strategies for strengthening enforcement and awareness initiatives.
Attended by commandant of 67 Bn SSB, representatives of 38 Bn SSB, deputy SP Tasso Kato, DAO Toli Bam, DDSE Hridar Phuntsok, and other NCORD members, the meeting examined the implementation of NIDAAN, a system designed to track drug offenders, and discussed district crime records.
The police reported intensified patrolling and awareness programs in schools on safety, POCSO, and NDPS-related issues, contributing to a decline in drug-related cases.
The deputy SP informed the committee that while there had been recommendations to operationalize the Jang checkpost, it remains inactive due to a standing order. However, he noted that the checkpost could be made operational if intelligence inputs warranted immediate action.
Darang highlighted that the crime rate under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act remains low in Tawang, citing a successful 2024 case where a drug supply chain was dismantled. He noted that while Tawang has reported fewer cases, areas like TCL remain more affected by drug-related issues.
He commended law enforcement efforts following the government's declaration of a "war against drugs," stating that police remain vigilant.
He urged parents to openly seek support for children affected by substance abuse, emphasizing the role of family in rehabilitation. Using the example of Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, he stressed the need to change societal attitudes toward individuals struggling with drug addiction, advocating for a focus on rehabilitation rather than stigma.
During an open discussion, members from paramilitary forces and intelligence agencies shared their observations and suggestions for strengthening anti-drug efforts in the district. The district administration and law enforcement authorities reaffirmed their commitment to keeping Tawang drug-free and encouraged the public to report any drug-related activities to the police.
