NGOPOK, Mar 18: The first edition of the Babu Okep Tayeng Memorial Mega Inter-Village Cricket Tournament was inaugurated on Tuesday at Ngopok village in East Siang district. Organized by the Ngopok Sports Association, the tournament aims to honor the legacy of Okep Tayeng while promoting the theme, “Adi for a Drug-Free Society.”
The tournament features 20 teams from across the Adi belts, fostering sportsmanship and community engagement. The inaugural match saw Borguli Cricket Club facing Bolik Cricket Club, with Bolik securing victory by eight wickets.
Okep Tayeng (1908-1990) was a World War II veteran, author, and educator known for his contributions to the Adi community. He translated the Four Gospels into Adi, authored “A Primer in Adi-Padam,” and promoted sustainable agricultural practices. His work in education, language development, and rural advancement continues to inspire generations.
Addressing the gathering, Mebo MLA Oken Tayeng commended the initiative, describing cricket as a game of strategy and teamwork, much like the leadership demonstrated by Okep Tayeng in his efforts for community welfare. Chief patron Dangi Perme spoke on the life and contributions of Okep Tayeng, highlighting his role in shaping education and language development.
Organizing chairman Nogor Megu announced that future editions of the tournament would be open to participants beyond the Adi belts to reflect the region’s diversity. The competition, which emphasizes unity and a healthy lifestyle, will award Rs 70,000 and a trophy to the winning team, while the runners-up will receive Rs 35,000 and a trophy.
