Yingkiong, Apr 4: The Upper Siang district police held the third Narco Coordination (NCORD) meeting on Friday at Yingkiong, chaired by deputy commissioner Talo Jerang, who is also the NCORD chairman.

During the meeting, the DC reviewed the actions taken by various departments based on decisions from the previous NCORD meeting. He stressed the importance of intensifying awareness programs in all drug-sensitive areas of the district.

Taking serious note of poor mobile network connectivity in the Katan and Sibum areas, the regions reported to have the highest number of NDPS cases, Jerang directed the SDO (Telecom) to inspect the current status of mobile towers and ensure their early activation.

He highlighted that lack of mobile connectivity not only hampers the local administration and police in responding swiftly to drug-related incidents but also disrupts the daily lives of residents.

Addressing the vulnerability of students to drug abuse, the DC instructed the deputy director of school education (DDSE) to ensure that, with the commencement of the new academic session, all school principals, headmasters, teachers, and staff are given orientation on the harmful effects of drugs.

He also called for special classes on drug abuse and mental health to be incorporated into the school curriculum to educate and sensitize students.

Additionally, Jerang directed the women and child development department to mobilise CDPOs and anganwadi workers to remain vigilant and continue spreading awareness about the dangers of drug abuse in their respective areas.

Several key officials participated and shared their perspectives during the meeting, including superintendent of police Token Saring, Mariyang ADC Nongkong Borang, DMO Dr Gepeng Litin, DD ICDS Ine Pertin, chairperson of Sikiing Kojee Charitable Society Dr Mity Jopir, among others.

The discussion focused on strengthening anti-drug efforts in schools and vulnerable communities, training teachers on drug abuse prevention, screening suspects, improving monitoring mechanisms, and enhancing telecom services in high-risk areas.
