Itanagar, Apr 16: The Arunachal Pradesh Women’s Welfare Society (APWWS) has raised serious concern over a reported case of abandonment and medical neglect involving a 34-year-old woman found in critical condition at her rented residence in Nyokum Lapang, Itanagar.

According to a statement issued by APWWS, the woman was allegedly left unattended by her husband, Jhony Gaduk, and his family, despite her visibly deteriorating health. The incident was flagged by the chairman of the Arunachal Life Saving Foundation, Ramesh Jeke, who intervened after receiving information about her condition on April 15.

Jeke arranged for the woman’s immediate hospitalisation, following which a joint team from APWWS and the Women Wing of the Galo Welfare Society visited RK Mission Hospital to assess her condition and provide support. The team described the circumstances surrounding the case as deeply troubling and indicative of broader systemic failures in safeguarding vulnerable women.

In a further disturbing development, the team was informed of another case at the same hospital, where a woman had been admitted and allegedly abandoned by her spouse, who has reportedly ceased responding to communication from the hospital staff.

Family members of the first victim have since reached the hospital and are reportedly pursuing legal action against the accused husband.

APWWS, while condemning the alleged act of abandonment, has called for urgent institutional reforms to prevent such incidents from recurring. The organisation stressed the need for more robust enforcement of existing legal protections and improved social support systems for women facing abandonment, domestic neglect, and related vulnerabilities.

The cases underscore persistent gaps in the protection of women's rights, particularly in domestic settings, and highlight the necessity of both legal accountability and broader societal awareness, the statement said.
