Itanagar, Apr 19: The Nyishi Elite Society (NES) on Saturday celebrated the 18th Nyishi Day with grandeur at the NES Research and Heritage Centre in Richi Jullang, honouring both academic toppers and professional achievers of the community.
In a significant recognition of the Nyishi identity, the state government had earlier notified April 19 as a gazetted holiday to mark “Nyishi Day”, commemorating the cultural pride and achievements of the state’s largest ethnic community.
As part of the celebration, the NES held its 20th Annual Academic Excellence Awards and Professional Achievers-2024, felicitating 21 meritorious students and 29 officers, including 19 in absentia, from the Nyishi community. The awards were given to direct recruits as well as promotees for their notable contributions.
Among the students awarded were the top three performers in the CBSE Class X and XII board examinations in Arts, Commerce, and Science streams.
In Class X, Gyamar Atte (95%), Kipa Mingpung and Khyoda Rinium (93.60% each), and Heri Dol and Tarh Laaz (93.4% each) were felicitated with awards and scholarships.
In the Class XII Humanities stream, Gungming Phassang (93.60%) and Oshin Likha (93.60%) were honoured as toppers, followed by Someen Kocho (92.40%) and Giogi Tajon (91.80%).
In Commerce, Indira Dolo (89.2%), Heri Pada (88.8%), and Dphu Melo (73.6%) were awarded, while the Science stream saw Teji Pobo (95%), Nipen Sonam Rapung (91%), and Nido Rilen emerge as the top scorers.
The NES also lauded six students who cracked national-level entrance exams. Chukhu Tomu, Chukhu Teki, and Siva Taba Loma were felicitated for clearing the JEE (Advanced 2024), while Mangnam Taku, Nikja Apanilo, and Yaran Karsing were honoured for qualifying NEET-2024 for medical admissions.
The event was graced by Rajya Sabha MP Nabam Rebia, Itanagar Mayor Tame Phassang, and APPSC chairman Prof Pradip Lingfa, among others.
Speaking at the event, NES president Prof Tana Showren commended the academic excellence of students, particularly the girls, and encouraged them to continue striving for higher achievements. He expressed hope that the professional achievers would uphold community values and professional ethics in their service.
Prof Showren also made a fervent appeal for the conservation of wildlife and biodiversity in the region, urged parents to promote the use of the Nyishi mother tongue, and advocated wearing traditional attire to support indigenous handlooms and local start-ups.
