Guwahati, Apr 22: The regional meteorological centre here, marked Earth Day on Tuesday, with an inspiring celebration themed “Our Power, Our Planet - Renewable Energy.”
Director of the Centre for Earth Sciences & Himalayan Studies (CES&HS), here Tana Tage while gracing the occasion, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the centre, for their vital role in advancing meteorological and climatological services, particularly in the Northeast.
Highlighting the fruitful collaboration between CES&HS and RMC, Tage emphasised the significant improvements in weather forecasting and disaster preparedness in Arunachal Pradesh. He noted that the state's Automatic Weather Station (AWS) network had been expanded, and efforts were underway to install Doppler Weather Radars (DWR), with one set to be installed soon in Namsai.
Concluding his address, Tage urged everyone to embrace the message of Earth Day: “Let Earth Day be our compass, guiding us towards a future that is green, clean, and sustainable. Let us pledge to be better stewards of our planet and leave a legacy of hope and harmony for generations to come.”
Scientist-G and Head of the Regional Meteorological Centre, Guwahati, KN Mohan, extended a warm welcome to the guests and educated students about the importance of renewable energy.
Dr Sanjay O’Neill Shaw, Scientist-F, passionately called for collective action to build a cleaner, stronger, and more sustainable world. Saiful Haque, Assistant Teacher, thanked RMC Guwahati for including students in the Earth Day celebrations.
Further discussions were led by Sunit Das, Scientist-F, who spoke about climate change and the necessity of renewable energy, and Dr Gayatry Kalita, Scientist-D, who engaged students in a dialogue on the importance of Earth Day and its role in promoting sustainable development. The event was anchored by Priyanka Singh, meteorologist at RMC.
To mark the occasion, saplings were planted as a symbol of commitment to the environment. Officials from RMC Guwahati, along with CES&HS representatives and students from Shyam Bhumi High School, formed a human chain, sending a powerful message of unity in the fight to protect the Earth.
