Itanagar, Apr 23: The Centre for Earth Sciences and Himalayan Studies (CESHS) here, marked Earth Day with a two-day celebration centered on the global theme “Our Earth, Our Planet: Renewable Energy Now,” emphasising renewable energy, environmental stewardship, and community participation.

As a premier institution under the state science & technology department, CESHS used the occasion to advance its mission in climatology, hydrology, geoscience, and clean energy innovation.

The main event took place at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) at Hawai in Anjaw District, on April 21–22, where students, officials, and educators gathered to promote awareness on environmental conservation.

Activities included drawing and essay competitions that encouraged students to creatively express their ideas on sustainability, followed by a plantation drive and a cleanliness campaign on Earth Day itself, underscoring the importance of environmental responsibility.

Hawai extra assistant commissioner (EAC) Vekhillum Bellai, addressed the gathering with a strong message on the importance of renewable energy and called on students to pledge lifelong commitment to protecting the environment.

AMDO Bredenso Yun, in his address, stressed the need for sustainable development and minimising environmental degradation. JNV principal inspired students to adopt eco-conscious habits, drawing on the cultural practices of the Mishmi community.

Hawai BDO Chagam Dolo, echoed these sentiments and proposed local waste-reduction initiatives as practical steps toward ecological harmony.

The event concluded with a prize distribution ceremony recognizing the students’ participation, followed by a group photograph that captured the spirit of unity and environmental advocacy.

Simultaneously, CESHS staff members at the Itanagar headquarters also observed Earth Day through a plantation drive and campus-wide cleanliness activity, reaffirming the institute’s commitment to leading by example in environmental stewardship.

Through these initiatives, CESHS continues to align its research and outreach with the national vision for a Green India and a self-reliant clean energy future, making Earth Day 2025 not just a celebration, but a renewed call to action.
