Ziro, Apr 25: Lower Subansiri deputy commissioner Vivek HP has expressed concern over excessive consumption of carbonated drinks like Coke, Pepsi, etc., by children.
Distributing test reports of the Gastric (stomach) Cancer Epidemiology & Risk Study done on 203 volunteers at Gyati Takka general hospital on Friday, he cautioned the people about decreasing population and urged the people to take care of their dietary habits.
The DC encouraged people to come forward and assist the screening team.
The screening was done from March 5 to 8 last, to understand and prevent gastric cancer among the people of Ziro valley.
Guwahati-based Dr B Borooah Cancer Institute (BBCI) director Dr BB Borthakur gave a brief of the screening test reports.
Out of the 203 participants, 51 were in the high-risk category, 70 were in the moderate risk category and 83 were in the nominal risk category for developing stomach cancer, he said.
Stating that there are multiple factors causing stomach cancer, Dr Borthakur appealed to people to voluntarily assist them for a few years, so that his team can assess their conditions, monitor their diets and bring timely interventions for prevention of onset of gastric cancer.
The screening programme is being conducted by Dr BBCI in collaboration with the State Cancer Society of Arunachal Pradesh, Naharlagun and Gyati Takka general hospital, Ziro with support from Lower Subansiri district administration and the Community Advisory Board of Ziro.
