Itanagar, Apr 26: The Jomlo Mongku Mithun Farmers Federation of Siang district, in collaboration with Nagaland-based ICAR-National Research Centre on Mithun (ICAR-NRC), organised awareness programmes on semi-intensive Mithun farming practices at Pangkeng and Sipeng villages.
The initiative aimed to enhance Mithun productivity, improve disease control, and promote better livestock management among farmers.
During the sessions, experts introduced farmers to the concept of semi-intensive Mithun rearing, which combines traditional forest grazing with improved management techniques.
Key aspects emphasised included the construction of night shelters with proper ventilation and drainage to ensure animal comfort and health. Farmers were advised to supplement natural forest grazing with additional feed to meet the nutritional needs of the Mithuns.
The importance of regular healthcare practices was highlighted, stressing the need for timely deworming, vaccinations, and mineral supplementation. Breeding management through controlled mating and reproductive monitoring was also discussed as a vital strategy to improve herd quality and productivity.
Additionally, participants were trained on waste management techniques, including regular cleaning of shelters and composting practices to maintain hygiene and environmental sustainability.
To support the practical aspects of the training, medicines and supplies such as Himax ointment for wound healing, Mindagold mineral supplements, Potash and Povidone Iodine as antiseptics, Albomar for deworming, along with syringes, examination gloves, and cotton rolls were demonstrated and distributed among the farmers.
The programme was widely appreciated by the local farming communities, who expressed hope that the new knowledge and practices would significantly improve the health and productivity of their Mithun herds, ensuring better livelihoods and sustainable farming practices for the future.
