ITANAGAR, Apr 30: With the onset of the monsoon season approaching, the Itanagar Capital Region (ICR) administration on Tuesday held a comprehensive review meeting on disaster preparedness, chaired by deputy commissioner Talo Potom.
Heads of line departments and administrative officers participated in the meeting, which focused on measures to address potential emergencies such as floods, landslides, and incidents of heavy rainfall.
The Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) was directed to monitor and report any damage to water pipelines caused by illegal earth-cutting, and to initiate legal action against violators. The department was also tasked with ensuring the timely booking of pipes and maintaining water supply for emergency needs.
The Power Department was asked to regulate voltage fluctuations and promptly restore damaged electrical infrastructure.
The Public Works Department and Highway division were instructed to clear roads and drainage systems of any obstructions to ensure smooth transportation and effective water flow during rainfall.
The Department of Food and Civil Supplies was advised to maintain adequate buffer stock of essential commodities, LPG, and reserve supplies of petrol, oil, and lubricants for emergency use.
The District Transport Officer was asked to submit a list of available light motor vehicles, JCBs, and dumpers, including contact details of their owners and drivers, for deployment in case of emergencies.
The State Disaster Response Force was directed to remain on high alert for potential rescue operations, while the district medical officer was instructed to ensure the availability of essential medicines, ambulance services, and updated disaster management protocols at health centres.
Administrative officers, including extra assistant commissioners, were asked to identify vulnerable areas, suitable relief camp locations, and evacuation routes.
The Itanagar Municipal Corporation was directed to ensure safe disposal of carcasses and maintain sanitation to prevent disease outbreaks.
The district information & public relations officer was tasked with issuing timely alerts to the public regarding weather-related developments.
Potom emphasised the importance of inter-departmental coordination, regular situation reports, and public awareness to minimise disaster risks. He called for a high level of readiness across all departments during the monsoon season.
The district administration has appealed to the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with authorities to ensure safety during adverse weather conditions.
