PASIGHAT, Apr 30: The District Level Committee of the Narco Coordination Centre (NCORD) convened a meeting here on Wednesday under the chairpersonship of East Siang Deputy Commissioner Tayi Taggu to review strategies for addressing drug abuse and trafficking in the district.

During the meeting, the DC took stock of measures undertaken so far and the progress made in curbing drug-related activities. Committee members briefed the administration on the current scenario, including areas of concern, age groups affected, and identified hotspots of substance abuse.

Taggu called for intensified information, education, and communication (IEC) campaigns, urging involvement of civil society groups, circle officers, and community leaders at all administrative levels.

The meeting also reviewed the status of Drug De-addiction Centres and Addiction Treatment Facility Centres (ATFCs), with participants stressing the need to make them fully operational to assist affected individuals.

Superintendent of police Pankaj Lamba informed the meeting that the police are working across enforcement, awareness, and rehabilitation efforts to address the issue. He noted that although enforcement remains a key responsibility, collaborative efforts with de-addiction agencies are essential, given the complexity of drug-related challenges.

Lamba said the department had identified specific villages for initiating targeted awareness drives to prevent substance abuse.
