YUPIA, Apr 30: The Department of Legal Metrology and Consumer Affairs (LM&CA) of Papum Pare district, conducted a routine inspection at the Naharlagun Market area on Tuesday to check price regulation, accuracy of weights and measures, and compliance with packaging and labeling norms.

The inspection, led by district consumer protection officer & assistant controller Debia Tana, along with inspectors Tao Tasar and Tarh Sonu, was supported by police personnel from Naharlagun Police Station. The team verified whether traders were adhering to the Legal Metrology Act, 2009, the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011, and the Arunachal Pradesh Legal Metrology (Enforcement) Rules, 2011.

According to officials, the inspection aimed to contain unfair trade practices, particularly the use of unverified weights and sale of non-standard packaged goods. A total of 10 traders were booked—eight for using unverified weights and measures, and two for violating packaging regulations.

The department stated that the exercise was part of a broader initiative to protect consumer rights and promote transparency in trade. It noted that regulatory oversight plays a critical role in maintaining consumer trust and ensuring fair pricing mechanisms.

Tana urged traders to comply with the amended rules to avoid penalties and called upon consumers to stay informed about their rights under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019. He reiterated that vigilance and awareness among consumers can act as a deterrent against malpractice in local markets.

The department is expected to carry out more such checks across the district to enforce compliance and safeguard consumer interests.
