Rono Hills, May 2: In a splendid celebration of India’s rich cultural heritage, the Arunachal Pradesh chapter of SPIC MACAY (Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth), in collaboration with the union culture ministry, and Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU), hosted a captivating cultural evening titled “Ragas & Rhythms.”

The event commenced on Thursday with an enchanting sitar recital by the distinguished Pandit Harashankar Bhattacharya, who brought the intricacies of Indian ragas to life. He was ably accompanied by Arunava Mukherjee on tabla, whose rhythmic brilliance added depth and energy to the performance.

The evening continued with a spellbinding Odissi dance performance by Padmashri Vidushi Madhavi Mudgal, one of India’s most revered exponents of the classical dance form. Her presentation, marked by grace, rhythm, and spiritual depth, held the audience in awe.

She was supported by a talented ensemble: Megha Shirodkar (vocals), Jitendra Kumar Swain (Pakhawaj), Yar Mohammad (sitar), and her disciple Shobha Bisht, who accompanied her on stage.

The cultural soirée was brought to life under the visionary leadership of Sokhep Kri, Chairperson of state chapter of SPIC MACAY, and Chayanika Vashistha, chapter coordinator. Their relentless dedication and coordination made the event a resounding success.

RGU vice chancellor Prof S K Nayak, appreciated SPIC MACAY’s enduring commitment to classical art forms. He announced future collaborations with NERIST and NIT Jote, promising more such enriching experiences for students across institutions.

RGU registrar Dr N T Rikam, in his address emphasised the importance of preserving and promoting India’s classical traditions. He lauded SPIC MACAY’s efforts and reaffirmed the university’s support for such cultural endeavors.

The event was skillfully conducted by Moyir Riba, nodal officer and academic & administrative coordinator at CDOE, RGU.

Drawing a large and appreciative audience comprising students, faculty, and art aficionados, “Ragas & Rhythms” proved to be a memorable cultural immersion. It echoed SPIC MACAY’s mission to inspire youth through the timeless beauty of Indian classical music and dance.
