Itanagar, May 5: Police have cracked a grievous robbery and assault case with the arrest of three individuals following a coordinated multi-state operation led by personnel of the Chimpu police station, officials said on Sunday.
The case pertains to the brutal attack on Khyoda Taju, a senior citizen working as a night guard for the ACE Pipeline Project, who was assaulted and robbed by three unidentified men on the night of November 22, 2024. The accused allegedly beat Taju after he resisted handing over the store keys, and fled with his ATM card, cash and a two-wheeler, police said.
The case was registered Under Sections 329(3), 309(6), and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 at the Chimpu police station.
The injured victim was admitted to Ramakrishna Mission Hospital, Itanagar. During investigation, police recovered the stolen Scooty from Rajgarh, Assam, which helped in tracing the suspects who had been frequently changing their location to evade arrest.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by Chimpu police station officer-in-charge, inspector N Nishant, was constituted under the supervision of Itanagar SDPO Kengo Dirchi. The team, with assistance from Assam Police, used technical surveillance and human intelligence to track the accused.
On April 27, the prime accused Nanu Basumatary was arrested at Gohpur Railway Station while travelling from Lakhimpur. Two days later, co-accused Rakesh Mili was held at Harmuti Railway Station while trying to flee to Dekargaon. Based on inputs from their interrogation, the third accused Dharamsha Brahma alias Nana was apprehended from Goroimari, under Gohpur Police Station, on May 1.
The accused have been identified as Nanu Basumatary, son of Opon Basumatary of Anandpur, Rajgarh; Rakesh Mili, son of Srikanta Mili of Milon Nagar, Gohpur; and Dharamsha Brahma alias Nana, son of Buddhadeb Brahma of Goroimari, Rajgarh, Assam. All three have confessed to their roles in the crime during preliminary interrogation.
Capital Superintendent of Police Rohit Rajbir Singh lauded the SIT for its prompt and coordinated efforts. He said the case highlighted the department’s firm stance on protecting senior citizens and ensuring justice through diligent investigation.
"Crimes against the elderly are particularly serious and will be dealt with strictly," he said.
