Yingkiong, May 7: The eighth edition of the District-Level Hangpan Dada Memorial Trophy (HDMT) for Under-16 boys and girls in football and volleyball began at the General Ground in Yingkiong, Upper Siang district, on Wednesday.

The event was inaugurated by MLA Alo Libang, who paid tribute to the late Hangpan Dada, a decorated soldier and recipient of the Ashok Chakra, stating that the tournament serves as a platform to honour his legacy and promote youth participation in sports.

Deputy commissioner Talo Jerang, addressing the gathering as guest of honour, encouraged the athletes to maintain sportsmanship and discipline. He outlined government provisions that support sportspersons, including job reservations and state-sponsored incentives aimed at developing grassroots sports infrastructure.

The opening day witnessed competitive matches between teams from various administrative subdivisions, including Tuting, Yingkiong, Geku, Mariyang and Jengging. In the inaugural football match for boys, Tuting defeated Yingkiong 1–0, while in the girls' category, Yingkiong secured a 1–0 win over Tuting.

The three-day tournament, which is part of a state-wide initiative to identify and promote young talent, will conclude on May 9 with final matches and a prize distribution ceremony.
