Naharlagun, May 7: A 35-year-old man was arrested by Papu Hills Police on Wednesday in connection with a molestation case, with authorities also recovering an unlicensed firearm and live ammunition from his residence, officials said.

"The arrest was made following a written complaint lodged by a 26-year-old woman on May 6, in which she alleged that the accused, Chello Kalar, assaulted and attempted to molest her upon her return from Guwahati to Naharlagun Railway Station," Naharlagun SP Mihin Gambo said.

According to the complaint, the victim had travelled to Guwahati along with the accused’s wife. Upon their arrival at Naharlagun Railway Station, Kalar allegedly assaulted her without provocation and tried to molest her.

When the victim resisted, the accused brandished a pistol and chased her while hurling obscene language and gestures, police said.

The woman managed to escape and took refuge inside the station premises before alerting her family. Based on her statement, an FIR was registered under sections 74/329(4)/131/351(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), read with Section 25(1)(b) of the Arms Act.

Acting on the complaint, SP Gambo constituted a special investigation team led by Inspector Gejum Basar, along with sub-inspectors A K Jha and Tase Bagang, constables Tepa Sikon and Pappu Halder, under the supervision of SDPO Rishi Longdo.

Through technical surveillance and intelligence gathering, the accused was traced to Karsingsa and apprehended after a brief pursuit on May 7, police said.

During interrogation, the accused confessed to threatening the victim and admitted to owning an unlicensed 7.65 mm pistol, six live rounds, a magazine, and a black pistol pouch, which were subsequently seized from his residence.

The accused has been taken into custody and further investigation is in progress, the SP added.
