Itanagar, Jun 6: Two operatives of the NSCN-K (Yung Aung faction) were gunned down in a fierce encounter with Indian security forces along the Indo-Myanmar border near Arunachal Pradesh’s Longding district on Thursday morning, official sources said.
The exchange of fire reportedly took place around 10 am in a dense forest area near Langkhu village, located inside Myanmar-occupied territory, when a patrol team of Indian forces, acting on specific intelligence, launched a border domination operation in Pongchau circle.
According to a statement from the Army, the patrol spotted suspected armed individuals and challenged them, prompting indiscriminate gunfire using heavy-calibre weapons from the militants. Security forces responded swiftly, forcing the armed group to retreat across the international border into Myanmar under cover of the thick jungle.
A thorough search was conducted, but the militants had already fled the area, the Army said.
Later, the NSCN/GPRN (YA) confirmed the deaths of two of its cadres — Sgt Maj Nyaklung and Lance Cpl Neyung Aung — in what it called a "well-coordinated ambush" by Indian troops.
The outfit claimed the firefight lasted nearly an hour and that the bodies of the slain insurgents had been recovered. The group also said the deceased cadres had been posthumously promoted for their "extraordinary bravery".
Meanwhile, Longding district police said they had not received any formal complaint or FIR related to the incident.
"We are awaiting official communication," said Pangchao police station officer-in-charge G Wangsu.
