Ziro, Jun 10: In a major step towards making Ziro Valley green and plastic-free, Lower Subansiri deputy commissioner Vivek H P on Tuesday distributed free cloth bags to members of the bazar welfare committees of Hapoli and Old Ziro markets.
Encouraging the initiative, the DC urged the SHGs associated with ArSRLM and the market committees to make ‘Plastic Free Ziro’ a model for other districts. He motivated women’s SHGs to be more innovative and to explore making additional items such as file covers, tablecloths, and curtains using traditional Apatani designs.
The SHGs and bazar welfare committees assured the outgoing DC of their continued commitment to the cause, vowing to work with enthusiasm to fulfill his vision of eliminating single-use plastics in the district.
‘Plastic Free Ziro’ is a key initiative of the deputy commissioner, implemented in collaboration with Power Grid under CSR support.
A cloth bag manufacturing unit has been established in a previously unused government school hostel, with SHGs engaged in stitching cloth bags. These eco-friendly bags not only help reduce plastic waste but also provide employment and economic opportunities.
Adorned with Apatani motifs and slogans like “Clean and Green Ziro” and “Plastic Free Ziro,” the bags aim to inspire community pride and awareness.
To encourage public participation, the cloth bags are being distributed free of cost for a limited period through the market welfare committees.
Present at the programme were ADC Himani Meena, CO Mige Bage, ArSRLM officials, SHG members, and bazar welfare committees representatives.
