Longding, Jun 20: Stressing that agriculture should be treated as a serious economic activity, Arunachal Pradesh horticulture minister Gabriel D Wangsu on Friday urged farmers in Longding district to embrace scientific methods for better yields and long-term income security.
“Farming will provide sustainable income for the long run and contribute to a self-reliant lifestyle,” Wangsu said, while launching the first phase of a training programme on scientific cultivation of high-value horticultural crops at Kanubari under the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH) 2024–25.
As part of the programme, over 200 farmers from Kamhua Noknu, Chopnu, Chatting, Ozakho and Naitong villages received saplings of commercially viable fruit crops such as jackfruit, avocado, dragon fruit, guava, rambutan and amla.
Calling for a shift in mindset, Wangsu said agriculture must be viewed as a profitable enterprise. He also directed the horticulture department to provide regular monitoring and technical support to farmers throughout the cultivation cycle.
The launch event was attended by Kanubari ADC Yashwa and senior officials from the horticulture department, who said more distribution phases are planned in the coming months to benefit several hundred more farmers in the district.
