Lower Subansiri to enforce COPTA soon
ZIRO, Dec 6: The Lower Subansiri district administration will soon implement Cigarette and Other Tobacco Product Act (COPTA), in every block of the district, said additional deputy commissioner Ziro, Nending Chatung.
Addressing a district-level coordination meeting of Tobacco Control Cell at DC’s office chamber, the ADC said awareness programmes will be carried out in blocks by involving traders, school teachers and PR leaders for proper implementation.
He further disclosed a flying squad team will regularly enforce the Act.
Lower Subansiri superintendent of police Bomge Kamduk suggested a prominent display of hoarding outside the shops that sell tobacco products while appealing cooperation from all other agencies in effectively controlling tobacco consumption “thereby improving the social health indicators.”
District medical officer Dr Tage Kano while informing that non-communicable diseases could result in 70 percent of human deaths, which is totally alarming, said diseases especially related to tobacco that can be prevented.
National Tobacco Control Programme SPO Dr Biman Natung presented a power point on COPTA and tobacco consumption health-related issues. He emphasized on the role of teachers and the educationists in creating awareness amongst the students. He also assured to provide funds for mobilization of flying squads and the awareness programs.
