ITANAGAR, Jul 30: Expressing its resentment against the alleged scandalous behaviour of Lower Subansiri district medical officer, the Apatani Women Association Ziro (AWAZ), Apatani Youth Association (AYA), and Apatani Students’ Union (ASU) staged a peaceful dharna against the officer here today outside the district court where the case is being heard.
Earlier on Thursday, Lower Subansiri district medical officer Dr Moli Riba was arrested by the Ziro police after a complaint of molestation and attempted rape was lodged by one of the lady staff of the same office. According to the FIR the complainant also claimed that the officer had threatened her of dire consequences if she reports the incident to anyone.
The district court has kept Dr Riba for seven days remand.
Meanwhile, reacting over the reports of DMO being arrested on charge of molestation and following condemnation from public in social media sites, the Arunachal Pradesh Doctors Association (APDA) and the state unit of Indian Medical Association (IMA) today in a joint statement condemned the manner in which the senior medical officer was arrested.
APDA and IMA said the issue was blown out of proportion especially in social media sites while terming it unfortunate and uncalled for. Fielding for Dr Riba, both the organisations called the DMO a gentleman and good administrator.
The medical fraternity while asserting its faith in the law has appealed for fair trial. It has also appealed to the public, NGOs and public leaders to not provoke the already volatile situation and to allow the law take its own course.
