ITANAGAR, Jun 26: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu's mother, Ama Lezang, died in a hospital here on Wednesday.

She was 75.

Lezang, who was suffering from old age-related ailments, died in the Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences.

She was the wife of former chief minister Dorjee Khandu.

Governor Lt Gen KT Parnaik (Retd) led the state mourning the death of Ama Lezang.

Laying a wreath on the mortal remains of late Lezang at the residence of the chief minister, Parnaik said that she was a remarkable woman.

“I join the people of Arunachal Pradesh in praying to Lord Buddha to give eternal peace to the departed soul and strength to the bereaved family to bear the irreparable loss,” the governor said in his message to Khandu.

Union minister Kiren Rijiju, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma and Arunachal Pradesh Deputy CM Chowna Mein mourned the death of Lezang.

My heartfelt condolences to my brother, his family & friends during this difficult time. May her soul rest in peace, Rijiju said in a post on X.

The pain of losing a mother cannot be put into words, Mein said while condoling Lezang's death.

In a post on social media on her passing away, the Assam CM also said, "The loss of mother is the biggest loss in one's life, which is impossible to replace."

AP Legislative Assembly speaker Tesam Pongte and his deputy Kardo Nyigyor have also mourned the demise of chief minister Pema Khandu’s mother.

The Arunachal Indigenous Tribes Forum has also mourned the demise of Ama Lezang.

Offering condolences to the bereaved family, the AITF, a conglomeration of community-based organisations, prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul. PTI

The Arunachal Press Club (APC) and the Arunachal Pradesh Union of Working Journalists (APUWJ) have expressed profound sorrow over the demise of Ama Lezang.

In their condolence messages, the APC and APUWJ extended their deepest sympathies to chief minister Khandu and his family during this time of immense grief.

Both organizations highlighted the significant contributions of Ama Lezang to the community and acknowledged her role in nurturing and guiding the state's leader.

"The passing of Ama Lezang is a tremendous loss for the Khandu family and the entire state of Arunachal Pradesh. We extend our heartfelt condolences and stand in solidarity with the chief minister and his family. Our thoughts and prayers are with Chief Minister Khandu and his family during this difficult time," the APC and APUWJ said in a joint statement.

The APC and APUWJ, along with the well-wishers and citizens, join in mourning her passing and offering prayers for her soul to rest in eternal peace, the organisations added.
