PASIGHAT, Aug 11: A video circulating on social media has sparked widespread concern after showing visitors climbing the epitaph of the Anglo-Abor War Memorial at Kekar Monying in Kebang village, Siang district. The memorial, which was unveiled by deputy chief minister Chowna Mein on August 31 last year, commemorates the pivotal Battle of Kekar Monying during the Anglo-Abor War of 1911-12.
The memorial, a tribute to the Adi martyrs and war heroes who resisted British forces, has become a popular tourist spot. However, its significance appears to be undermined as it is increasingly treated as a selfie zone, with visitors showing little respect for the site’s historical and cultural importance.
Entrepreneur Oyin Paron expressed deep concern over the disrespectful behavior, warning that if such actions continue, the memorial may not withstand even five years of neglect and misuse. He stated that such actions are "an assault on the memories of those who gave their lives for our freedom and to defend our nation," and called for greater awareness and respect for the site.
Residents have urged authorities and the public to spread awareness through social media campaigns and other initiatives to prevent further disrespect of the memorial and to educate visitors on its historical importance.
