ITANAGAR, Aug 16: The Arunachal Pradesh Women’s Welfare Society (APWWS) raised serious concerns over the escalating crimes against children in the state during a recent meeting with the Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Protection of Child Rights chairperson, Ratan Anya.

The APWWS presented a representation outlining the urgent need for action to address the increasing instances of bullying in schools and the sexual exploitation and trafficking of minors.

In their submission, the APWWS emphasized the severe impact of bullying on students, which includes physical, verbal, and psychological harassment, creating unsafe learning environments.

The Society called on the Commission to enforce strict adherence to regulations in residential and private schools and to investigate bullying incidents thoroughly. They also urged for the implementation of comprehensive anti-bullying policies, awareness programs for students, teachers, and parents, and the establishment of a confidential helpline for reporting such incidents.

The APWWS also expressed deep concern over the rising cases of sexual exploitation and trafficking of minor girls, particularly considering recent incidents involving sex rackets. They condemned these activities and called for expedited legal proceedings to ensure justice for victims.

The Society urged the Commission to monitor these cases closely and take firm action against perpetrators.

Additionally, the APWWS highlighted the need for mandatory identity verification for employees in hotels, restaurants, resorts, pubs, parlours, and spas to prevent the exploitation of minors.

They proposed rigorous background checks, a ban on the employment of minors, and stringent regulations to ensure compliance.

In response, Anya assured the APWWS of the Commission's commitment to addressing these issues. She outlined plans for an upcoming coordination meeting with various stakeholders and appealed to the APWWS to support the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and awareness initiatives to combat these critical problems.

The APWWS reaffirmed its commitment to collaborate with the Commission in tackling these pressing concerns to safeguard the well-being of children across Arunachal.
