Pasighat, Jan 17: In a proactive move to curb sound pollution and ensure road safety, Pasighat Police on Friday confiscated around 80 illegally modified bike silencers, which were causing disturbance to the public.
The silencers were seized and dismantled as part of a special drive under the ongoing ‘Road Safety Month’ campaign.
The modified parts were destroyed using a JCB machine at the Reserve Police Line (RPL) campus in the presence of SP Pankaj Lamba, DSP Ayup Boko, traffic police officers, and media personnel.
The SP informed that the seized silencers exceeded the permissible decibel limits, violating traffic regulations. The use of such modified silencers is not only illegal but also poses significant safety risks.
“Modified silencers can be very loud and can disturb children, senior citizens, and other road users, leading to a greater chance of accidents. We have a zero-tolerance policy towards these activities, as they threaten the safety of everyone on the roads,” the SP said.
Lamba explained that many riders replace or modify the factory-installed exhaust systems, resulting in dangerously high noise levels. This can impair visibility and increase the risk of collisions.
“As part of the “Road Safety Month 2025” campaign, police officers have fined numerous riders and confiscated over 80 modified silencers so far. Today, they were destroyed to ensure they no longer pose a hazard,” he said.
The district police chief also warned bikers against using such modifications and advised them to refrain from altering factory-installed parts. He further cautioned that strict legal action would be taken against those involved in manufacturing and selling illegal silencers.
