Shillong, Jan 24: Animal Husbandry and Dairying minister Gabriel D Wangsu on Friday called for a transformative approach to livestock farming, stressing the need for modernization and youth engagement to address the sector's challenges.

Speaking at the North East Livestock Conclave in Shillong, Wangsu highlighted the declining livestock population in Arunachal, attributing it to genetic regression and the aging farming demographic.

He underscored the importance of equipping the younger generation with modern skills, proposing the implementation of the National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF), comprehensive training programs, and mentorship initiatives.

"The future of livestock farming lies in innovation and attracting young entrepreneurs to the sector," Wangsu said, urging for robust financial mechanisms and insurance options similar to the Unnati scheme to mitigate risks and encourage youth participation.

The minister also emphasized strengthening veterinary services in rural areas, advocating the establishment of a network of "Pranibandhu" (Animal Health Workers) at the village level. He suggested leveraging technology through telemedicine and digital platforms to improve access to animal healthcare.

The North East Livestock Conclave, organized by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD) in collaboration with the Meghalaya government, is aimed at addressing challenges and exploring opportunities in the livestock sector across the region.

Wangsu was joined by a delegation from Arunachal Pradesh, including senior officials such as animal husbandry secretary Hage Tari, director Dr Danjan Longri and other key officers.
