Changlang, Jan 30: Emphasizing the importance of need-based distribution of scheme benefits, Agriculture minister Gabriel D Wangsu on Thursday highlighted the critical role of quality inputs, particularly in fisheries and agriculture.
He directed the fisheries department to establish hatcheries using revolving funds to ensure sustainable fish seed production.
Chairing a review meeting with heads of departments (HoDs) and the deputy commissioner of Changlang district, the minister assessed the progress and challenges across agricultural and allied sectors.
Officials apprised him of the district’s substantial agricultural potential, while flagging critical issues such as acute staff shortages, non-functional offices, and low productivity levels. Updates on flagship schemes' implementation and financial status were also provided.
Wangsu focused on the implementation of the Atma Nirbhar program, stressing the need for proper beneficiary identification and support. He expressed concern over the potential misuse of scheme funds and urged for stringent monitoring mechanisms to ensure transparency.
The minister also shared updates on the "Catch Them Young" initiative, revealing that the first phase is focusing on fisheries and animal husbandry, with agriculture and horticulture sectors to follow.
"We aim to nurture future leaders in these sectors through comprehensive training programs," said Wangsu.
In a significant announcement, Wangsu introduced his personal initiative, "Krishi Kendra," which aims to provide a unified office space for all allied departments in each district.
"This integration will significantly ease farmers' difficulties in dealing with multiple departments," he added.
The review meeting also covered the progress of the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY) and Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH) schemes, with discussions on banking-related challenges in fund disbursement.
Wangsu emphasized the need for enhanced fodder production, warned against private dealerships of plants, and highlighted the importance of proper nutrition for farmers. He also addressed concerns regarding career progression for department officials, linking it to their commitment to state development.
“Our departments directly impact people’s lives. It’s crucial to identify and motivate young farmers while ensuring that existing farmers receive adequate support,” the minister said, stressing the vital link between departmental efficiency and agricultural progress.
The meeting concluded with a renewed focus on strengthening the agricultural sector through improved coordination, efficient resource utilization, and farmer-centric approaches.
