Itanagar, Feb 4: The Rajiv Gandhi University Students' Union (RGUSU) has urged Education Minister P D Sona to introduce Mass Communication and Psychology courses at Arunachal Pradesh University (APU) in Pasighat and government colleges across the state.
The request was presented in a memorandum during the minister's visit to the central varsity as part of the 42nd Foundation Day celebrations.
Highlighting the growing demand for skilled professionals in these fields, the RGUSU emphasised their significance in enhancing individual well-being and societal development.
The union praised the success of RGU’s existing Mass Communication and Psychology departments but underscored the need to expand these programs, especially at the undergraduate level and in government colleges.
“The absence of undergraduate programs in Mass Communication in government colleges creates a significant barrier for aspiring students," the memorandum noted, pointing out that neighboring states already offer diverse courses in this field.
The RGUSU argued that establishing such programs would not only boost APU’s academic reputation but also support the growth of Arunachal Pradesh’s media sector.
On Psychology, the union stressed the lack of program availability and the resulting shortage of mental health professionals in the state. They highlighted its relevance across education, healthcare, and social work sectors, arguing that introducing these programs would improve mental health awareness and services.
The RGUSU called for the introduction of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in these subjects at APU and select government colleges, alongside sufficient budgetary allocations, infrastructure support, and the recruitment of qualified faculty.
In addition to academic appeals, the union sought financial assistance from the minister for developing infrastructure for their office and supporting other student initiatives.
Responding to the memorandum, Sona assured the students that he would carefully review their demands. He acknowledged the importance of these subjects and committed to addressing their concerns.
The minister also commended the students’ body for their proactive approach to advancing higher education in Arunachal Pradesh.
