NAHARLAGUN, Feb 26: The fifth edition of the Nyokum Yullo festival was celebrated in Naharlagun on Wednesday with traditional fervor, bringing together members of the Nyishi community and others to honor their cultural heritage. Organized by the Naharlagun Nyokum Yullo Celebration Committee, the event witnessed participation from people of all ages dressed in traditional attire.

Mayor Tamme Phassang, attending as the chief guest, extended his greetings to the gathering and underscored the festival’s importance in preserving the Nyishi identity.

"We are Nyishi because of Nyokum, and because of Nyokum, we are Nyishi," he said, urging the community to continue celebrating the festival irrespective of religious affiliations.

Phassang emphasized that while religion is a personal choice, customs and traditions should be preserved. "If we stop celebrating our own festival today, our traditions and culture will be forgotten in the future," he said.

Addressing logistical concerns, he called for identifying a more suitable venue for the festival and assured the organizing committee of his support in securing one.

"I have been witnessing the festival in Naharlagun for many years, but the current location is not ideal. I am ready to discuss this with senior members and extend all necessary assistance," he added.

The festival featured various cultural performances, traditional rituals, and community gatherings, reflecting the significance of Nyokum Yullo in strengthening cultural identity and fostering unity within the community.
