Tezu, Apr 3: A one-day national seminar on “Uniform Civil Code: Issues and Challenges” was organized at Indira Gandhi Government College, here on Thursday.

The event, hosted by the department of political science, witnessed participation from eminent scholars across the country.

In his introductory remarks, Dr Kangki Megu, principal of the college, highlighted the vast scope of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and its challenges, particularly concerning customary laws and indigenous traditions.

Delivering the keynote address, Dr B Komow, dean of research at Arunachal University of Studies, traced the genesis and conceptual framework of the UCC, stressing the need for equity in society.

Dr S S Das from the Centre for Juridical Studies, Dibrugarh University, in his plenary address, elaborated on the legal and constitutional aspects of the UCC. He expressed optimism that its implementation would foster unity and integration while empowering women.

Earlier, the seminar commenced with a welcome address by Dr P C Swain, head of the political science department who underlined its significance in the context of 75 years of the Indian Constitution.

Assistant Professor Kesang Drema coordinated the seminar, while faculty member Atosha Bellai acted as rapporteur.

Faculty member Chemkop Mossang also spoke.
