Shillong, Apr 7: The Geological Survey of India (GSI) and the Centre for Earth Sciences and Himalayan Studies (CESHS), Government of Arunachal Pradesh, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Monday to collaborate on scientific studies related to geothermal energy and other geosciences in Arunachal Pradesh and the Northeast region.
The agreement was formalised during the 175th anniversary celebrations of GSI at its North Eastern Region headquarters in Shillong.
Speaking on the occasion, GSI director general Asit Saha described the MoU as a significant development towards strengthening the geological, mineralogical, hydrological and broader earth science framework of the Arunachal Himalayan region. He assured full support from GSI to CESHS in promoting earth sciences in the region.
Highlighting GSI’s contributions since its inception in 1851, CESHS director Tana Tage acknowledged the institution’s role in shaping India’s scientific and mineral development. He said that CESHS, though a relatively young organisation, shares a similar vision and aims to contribute meaningfully to the field of earth sciences, both in Arunachal Pradesh and across the country.
Tage underlined the potential of the Arunachal Himalaya as a promising geothermal province and expressed optimism that the collaboration would combine traditional knowledge with scientific innovation to unlock the region’s energy resources.
