Yupia, Apr 9: In a strong push against rising drug abuse among youth, the Papum Pare district education department on Wednesday, organised a drug Abuse awareness programme at Balijan government higher secondary school, under the Samagra Shiksha (ISSE) scheme.

The initiative focused on educating elementary and secondary students in the Balijan block of the district, about the dangers of drug abuse and strategies for prevention.

Papum Pare (Rural) deputy commissioner Jiken Bomjen urged the students to steer clear of drugs.

“Drug abuse not only destroys individuals but also weakens the fabric of our society,” he said, while encouraging the young audience to adopt the mantra “Say No to Drugs” and to safeguard their future as responsible citizens.

The event featured expert talks by Tasa Diri from the police department and Dr Gekar Loyi from the health department.

They discussed the types of drugs, their origins, and the devastating consequences of addiction. Both emphasised the critical role of education and awareness in preventing substance abuse and building a resilient, drug-free community.

The programme saw active participation from local leaders and educators, including zilla parishad member (ZPM) Tem Pika, deputy director of school education (DDSE) T T Tara, school principals, headmasters and a large number of students.

The collaborative effort underscored the community's united stance against drug abuse and its commitment to guiding the younger generation toward a healthier, more hopeful future.
