Tezu, Apr 11: A coordination meeting of the Lohit District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) was held at the District Secretariat here at Tezu on Friday to review preparedness measures and enhance inter-departmental coordination ahead of the upcoming monsoon season.
The meeting commenced with a welcome address by district disaster management officer (in-charge) Asmi Mega, who underlined the importance of early planning and collective action to mitigate the impact of seasonal disasters. She called for all stakeholders to ensure community resilience and effective dissemination of information.
Addressing the meeting, MLA Mohesh Chai urged all departments to prioritize monsoon preparedness, emphasizing that it directly concerns the safety and survival of the people. Noting Tezu’s vulnerability to flooding, he called for detailed data on houses affected or relocated due to floods over the past four years. He stressed the need for each department to fulfil its responsibilities and ensure that no citizen is left vulnerable.
Deputy commissioner Kesang Ngurup Damo highlighted the significance of preparedness in minimizing the loss of life and property. He called for the issuance of advisories in local languages, raising public awareness, and the establishment of a reliable early warning system. The DC also stressed the need for seamless communication and coordination among departments during emergencies.
SDO Rakesh Tacho flagged the recurring flood threat from the Balijan River and suggested long-term preventive measures, such as the plantation of bamboo groves along riverbanks to curb soil erosion and manage river flow.
The meeting was attended by ZPM Balong Tindiya, representatives from the ITBP, BRO, NHIDCL, and members of the DDMA. Discussions focused on vulnerability mapping, quick response protocols, and strengthening infrastructure in high-risk areas.
The meeting concluded with a collective commitment to enhance disaster resilience across the Lohit district and ensure proactive measures are in place before the onset of the monsoon.
