Namsai, Apr 14: The much-anticipated three-day international Maha Sangken festival began with grandeur and spiritual fervor at the Golden Pagoda (Kongmu Kham) here on Monday, which was marked by sacred rituals, vibrant cultural displays, and a strong push to promote tourism through tradition.

The festival was inaugurated by deputy chief minister Chowna Mein by leading the symbolic “Descent of Lord Buddha to Earth at dawn,” a spiritually significant ritual for the Tai-Khamti community.

The event was also held at Parayatti Sasana Vihara Namsai by MLA Chau Zingnu Namchoom. A peaceful procession followed, from the entry gate to the festival stage, officially setting the tone for the festivities.

Greeting the gathering, Mein said, “We believe that during Sangken, Lord Buddha descends to Earth. To mark this sacred moment, we bring the idol from the Vihara and bathe it with clean water as a gesture of respect and devotion.”

The day featured traditional practices such as the ritual washing of monks’ feet, a gesture of humility and reverence. In the evening, families honored their elders by washing their feet to express gratitude and seek blessings.

“This is not just a religious observance but also a celebration of spring—a season of renewal. Pouring water symbolises washing away sins and brings health, wealth, and prosperity,” Mein added.

A major cultural highlight was the enchanting performance by Thai troupes and the traditional Sangken cum Maha Sangken dance, which captivated the audience and reflected the rich heritage of the Tai-Khamti people.

The deputy chief minister underscored the broader vision of using the festival to boost tourism.

“The festival is a platform to showcase our culture, heritage, and traditions to the world. With growing interest from international tourists and tour operators, we aim to make this an annual celebration at Golden Pagoda,” Mein pointed out.

The event saw participation from prominent dignitaries including RD and Panchayat minister Ojing Tasing, WCD minister Dasanglu Pul, MLAs Chau Zingnu Namchoom, Puinnyo Apum, Oni Panyang, Tapi Darang, and DCs of Namsai and Tezu.

Revered bhantes and community members from all walks of life also joined the celebration.

Adding a touch of international diplomacy, Ambassador of Italy to India Antonio Enrico Bartoli, along with his daughter Sofia Bartoli and delegation member Kapil Kumria, arrived ahead of their scheduled participation in the festivities tomorrow.
