Namsai, Apr 17: Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein on Thursday attended the foundation stone laying ceremony for three major Buddhist projects at the Mahabodhi Centre in Nongtaw, marking what officials described as a bold stride toward transforming Arunachal Pradesh into a global hub for Theravada Buddhist learning and spiritual tourism.

The ceremony marked the commencement of construction for the 108-ft Phra Maha Sutong-Pe (Wish-Fulfilling Buddha Statue), the Vajirasana Buddha Vihara (Diamond Throne Buddha Temple), and the Mahabodhi Sanghavasa, a monastic residence for 100 monks.

The Phra Maha Sutong-Pe statue foundation was laid by Venerable Kassapa Mahathera, president of the Mahabodhi Society, Bengaluru, while the Vajirasana Buddha Vihara was inaugurated by Venerable Aggadhamma Mahathera, chief abbot of the Pariyatti Sasana Buddha Vihara, Namsai. The foundation for the monastic residence was laid by Venerable Dhammakitti Mahathera, president of the Arunachal Pradesh Bhikkhu Sangha.

These projects are expected to transform Namsai into a prominent centre for global Buddhist pilgrimage and education, fulfilling the vision of the late Venerable Acharya Buddharakkhita, founder of the Mahabodhi Society, who aspired to establish eight Dhamma centres across Arunachal Pradesh.

Speaking on the occasion, Mein said the projects symbolize a revival of spiritual identity and reflect the state's commitment to Dhamma values. He added that institutions like the Mahabodhi Lord Buddha College and the Mahabodhi Skill Development Centre will play a crucial role in empowering the local youth through academic and vocational opportunities.

Mein also proposed the creation of a comprehensive Buddhist Circuit connecting sacred sites in Namsai, Mechuka, Tuting, Itanagar, West Kameng, and Tawang. He described the initiative as a “path of Dhamma – of light, learning, and peace,” aimed at promoting unity and attracting global pilgrims.
