Itanagar, May 8: Police have arrested five drug peddlers and seized 140.15 grams of heroin along with vehicles used in drug trafficking in Banderdewa and Naharlagun on Wednesday.
In the first operation, a team led by Naharlagun PS officer-in-charge Inspector K Dev along with others raided Prem Nagar area, Naharlagun and arrested drug peddler identified as Md Sariful Islam (36), resident of Bihpuria, Assam, Naharlagun SP Mihin Gambo said on Thursday.
He said the police recovered 37 vials of heroin weighing 48.7 grams.
Acting on Islam’s disclosure, the police team intercepted Md Shaik Farid (24), resident of Lakhimpur and Md Ashraful Islam (23), resident of Laluk, Assam at Kankar Nallah, after a brief chase and physical confrontation.
Gambo said an additional 24 grams of heroin (in two soap cases) and a Bajaj Motorcycle used in trafficking were seized.
A case has been registered at Naharlagun PS under Section 21(b)/29 NDPS Act, the SP said.
In another case, a special team of Banderdewa PS led by sub-inspectors SK Singh and Sunny Salong and others and a section of 138 Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force, acting on credible input, intercepted a car at Banderdewa check gate.
Two individuals identified as 23-year-old Kirry Riba and 27-year-old, Techi Maj were apprehended.
During search in presence of independent witnesses, the SP said 66.75 grams of heroin in 10 vials were recovered from Riba’s possession.
Gambo said the contraband along with the vehicle used in transportation of the drugs were seized and a case has been registered at Banderdewa PS under Section 21(b) NDPS Act R/W Sec 3(5) BNS.
The SP, who supervised the operations along with Naharlagun SDPO Rishi Longdo, praised the dedicated efforts of the teams in continuing their aggressive crackdown on drug trafficking.
He reaffirmed the commitment of police to protect the youth from the clutches of drug abuse.
