Itanagar, Jun 24: The All Arunachal Pradesh Workers’ Union (AAPWU) has written to the chief minister, who also holds the public works department portfolio, seeking the restoration of 50 surveyor posts that were abolished following the upgradation of the positions to junior engineer roles.
The AAPWU expressed concern over the impact of the decision, citing reduced employment opportunities and job insecurity, particularly for casual and contingency surveyors as well as ITI graduates specialising in surveying and related fields.
The union stated that the move to restructure technical roles has adversely affected workers who have dedicated years of service with the hope of regularisation. It also argued that the removal of surveyor posts had led to an increase in unemployment among skilled ITI pass-outs and eliminated a key technical support role essential for ground-level operations.
The AAPWU urged the state government to reconsider the decision and either reinstate the abolished posts or create new surveyor positions to accommodate eligible candidates. The union stated that the change had a disproportionate impact on casual and contingency workers, who now face an uncertain future.
Signatories to the memorandum included AAPWU president Tadar Chai, secretary general Tarh Tamans, and vice-president (HQ-cum-admin) Tadar Cheku. Copies of the letter were also forwarded to the principal secretary and the superintending engineer (coordination) of the PWD for further necessary action.
